Patrick Curtin Memorial Blitz

The semi-finals of the Patrick Curtin Memorial football blitz took place this afternoon. All teams showed great teamwork and sportsmanship. Lots of skill on display and great participation was shown by all. We are all looking forward to the final next Wednesday. Well done to everyone for showing great spirit and determination!

Sports Day

The fun continued with whole school sports day activities!! From running races to spud + spoon races, to sack races and 3-legged races, and to welly throwing and balloon races, laughs and giggles were plenty!! It was great to see everyone encouraging and cheering one another on.

Athletics

The day was finished with Athletics!! A huge thanks to Miss Finnegan for sharing her skills and talent. The hurdles were great fun & tried by everyone!! It was tricky to get the Ready, SET, Go part of the running right, but after a few false starts they nailed it!! The javelin throwing proved very competitive even though the breeze may have caused a few funny directions!!! A great way to end a fun day!!!

Patrick Curtin Memorial Blitz

Next up we had the first round of our annual Patrick Curtin Memorial Tournament for 1st to 6th Classes. Some great football was played and the inclusion of everyone on the field showed fantastic teamwork. We look forward to the semi-finals on Thursday. Thanks to Pat for being our referee.

Boxing

We kicked off this morning with Boxercise!! We got a taster session with one of our moms, Niamh, and her parents Grahame & Maria & her sister Scarlette. Everyone really enjoyed this and learned the disciplines that the go with boxing. The club is Trojan Boxing Club in Listowel. Classes are held for age 5 and upwards. What a fun start to the day!! Thanks Niamh!!

PAWS

To start Active Schools Week, Rochelle from PAWS came into us and gave a talk to each of the rooms on water safety. It is so important to learn about this all year around but especially facing the summer holidays. The children in the Senior Room looked at First Aid also. A big Thank You Rochelle!

Active Schools Week

It was another successful Active Schools Week this year with a wide variety of activities on offer. Monday started off with a visit from Rochelle from PAWS to explore all things water safety with the children. The children also put their basketball skills to the test with a session from Mrs. Quill and engaged in a mini-basketball blitz. Tuesday began with an introduction to boxing for all ages. A parent volunteered along with their family who are part of the local boxing club to come to the school and give children a taster about the skills and fitness involved in boxing. Our annual Patrick Curtin Memorial blitz began on Tuesday with each team playing a match each. Four teams went on to compete in the Semi-final which was held on Thursday. Ms. Finnegan set activities to explore different aspects of Athletics with the children including hurdles, sprints and javelin throwing. Wheelie Wednesday got off to a more ‘zen’ start with another parent volunteering and showcasing their expertise in yoga. The children got a chance to mediate, stretch and practice new yoga moves. The children also got the opportunity to hop on their bikes and other vehicles around the yard. Later in the day, the annual sports day races were ran on the school pitch. The day was finished off with a walk through the woods and a trip to the playground to enjoy the local amenities. The Active Schools committee along with other children in the senior room set up stations for the whole school to participate and enjoy in the community centre on Thursday morning. The semi-finals of the Patrick Curtin Memorial took place on Thursday afternoon with two teams progressing to the final next week. Active Schools Week was finished off on Friday with more sports day races in the community centre. A jam-packed week full of fun-filled activities for all the children to enjoy!

Keeping fit and active

Pupils from all classes engage in active breaks each day to keep their minds and bodies fit and healthy. This year we participated in the Olympic Movement Break Challenge. Each day pupils take on the Daily Mile. We are hoping to take part in the Run Across Europe Challenge next Month and reach as far as Greece!

Cumann na mBunscoil Football

The boys and girls from 4th and 6th participated in the Cumann na mBunscoil football competition with two other neighbouring schools. They put the skills they learn and develop each week with the local GAA coach, John, to the test. Parents from the class also volunteer at matches to support the children and provide their own knowledge and skills about football.

Sports Day

What a day! We had sack races, three legged races, daily mile, welly throwing, wheelbarrow racing, not to mention acres of fun! Well done to all our boys and girls who gave Active Schools Week their all! They cheered on their pals every step of the way!

Yoga

A lovely few hours were spent yesterday morning in a different frame of mind. Thanks to Paulina, everyone untensed their bodies and calmed their minds down and had some lovely relaxation yoga – Yin. It was fabulous, a big change at the start but the children soon switched over and enjoyed the change of pace and serenity it brought. We are very grateful Paulina thank you for your time and energy.
