Help my Kid Learn

help my kid learnA new website – www.helpmykidlearn.ie – for parents and guardians – gives ideas for activities that parents can do with their children to improve their child’s speaking, reading, writing and maths skills. www.helpmykidlearn.ie mixes the old with the new – from card games and hopscotch that help practice maths, to e-books that can be read out to the child and “Apps” you can download to a smart phone. Information is broken down into 5 age groups: 0-2 years, 3-4 years, 5-7 years, 8-9 years and 10-12 years. Activities are organised into 5 main areas: Talk, Play, Read, Write and Count. There are links to other websites, and audio and video content. This website was developed as part of the Department of Education’s National Strategy to Improve Literacy and Numeracy among Children and Young people.

‘Active School Week’

Children were encouraged to get active in lots of different ways: Children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd classes took part in

Onzie Run: They wore their P.J.s or onzies and ran around the school, to the playground and back again.

Dancing:  Children brushed up on their dance moves with the Macarena, Cha Cha Slide and Gangram style songs.

Meditation & Yoga: The children slowed down and tried something new. They developed their mental and spiritual practice.

Welling Throwing Competition: James Horgan O’Brien was our proud winner of the Welly Throwing Competition.

Spud & Spoon Race: Conor Kissane was our proud winner of our Spud & Spoon Race.

Wheel Barrow Race: James Kissan and Conor Mulvihill were the pair that won the Wheel Barrow Race.

All had lots of fun while getting active during Active School Week!

Green Schools’ Programme

As part of ‘Green Schools’ Programme ‘  children took part in an ‘Action Green Day on Thursday 16th April. All wore something green and took part in a litter clean up. Junior and Senior Infants planted sunflower seeds in individual pots and potato seeds in potato grow bag.  Integrating with R.E./Science Strand Unit: plants and animals, growth was observed and the need for light and water was noted.

‘Spirit of Easter’

Children working with the local Liturgy Group, recycling school milk bottles that will be used to distribute Easter Holy Water.

Scór na bPáistí – Killarney

Bóthar na nGabhar

Our school has always supported the charity Bóthar na nGabhar during the Lenten Period. On the day of Easter holidays there is a draw for  Easter Eggs ( 1 per room) which are generously sponsored by Gala Moyvane.

Scór na bPáistí 2015

Congratulations and best wishes to all who took part in Scór na bPáistí especially to the Ballad Group, Solo singer and the dancers who now go forward to compete in Knocknagoshel on Sunday 8th March.

‘Pancake Party’

Participating in the ‘National Pancake Party 2015’ the Children of Murhur N. S. Moyvane collected €170 for The National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght.

Christmas Concert

Our school concert was a great success on Friday night 12th December at the Marian Hall.  A large crowd attended. All were very impressed with the talent on show.  A big ‘Thank You’ to all who helped especially our  past pupils who gave of their time and expertise to produce such a wonderful display on the night and without whom the concert would not have been possible.

Visit of the Sam Maguire

On Wednesday November 26th, Kerry footballer Shane Enright visited our school bringing with him The Sam Maguire Cup.

The children were delighted with the visit where they got Shane’s autograph and a photo with the Sam.

‘Jersey Day’

We had a Jersey Day in September before the All-Ireland and raised €204 .

Jacqueline Brick –  Director of Nursing Listowel Community Hospital – Palliative Care Centre visited us and we presented her with a cheque.

Green School

We launched our Green School Campaign in April 2014 with a ‘Spring Clean Up’ in the area of our school.

Junior and Senior Infant Classes cleaned the school grounds.  1st  2nd and 3rd classes  cleaned the church grounds and our community centre yard.

4th 5th and 6th Classes picked up litter in the sport’s field and in the wood.

Our 1st Green Flag is for litter and waste.  Pupils are encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle. Recycling facility for used batteries, old phones and used ink cartridges is currently available in the school.
